They have pickup trucks in America

From his website:
Stefan Koehler is a recent immigrant from Germany, Stefan was an eyewitness to the horrors of life under a dictatorship. He is now thankful and proud to live in America, the country of his dreams, the land of freedom and opportunity. His goal is to encourage Americans to appreciate and honor their great nation. His authentic enthusiasm is highly upbeat, touching, contagious.

I think my favorite part of this was when he brought out the piece of the Berlin Wall.  I have to throw in the mentioning of Presidents Kennedy and Reagan’s speeches, and when the Immigration Officer welcomed him ‘home’.

Each of us here in America either is an immigrant now, or our ancestors were.  Some came from Europe, centuries ago, some from far-flung parts of the globe today.  It may have been people fleeing Vietnam, Africans coming here for a better life, or yes, Mexicans who see the corruption and come here (legally, as with all the immigrants) to start over.

I hear constantly from people who have been here for generations about how horrible America is.  We’ve done this, or are doing that.  There’s a reason people from every continent and every country quite literally risk their lives to make it to America.  They know what real oppression is, they know what real economic suffering is, they know what real poverty is.  They may have lived under real oppression because of their religion, or their ethnicity, or maybe they had fought against tyrants, and their side lost.  Whichever the case, the stories of freedom and opportunity in America have spread around the world for centuries, and people answered the call.

I was having a conversation just today, and we were discussing how easy we have it here.  We have such a good life, from the top to the bottom, that we complain about such trivial things.  The very reason we complain about trivial things, is that we are so blessed.  People don’t starve to death in America, even our poor have the problem of too much to eat.  We don’t die in heat or cold waves in any real numbers.  76% of the poor have air conditioning.  Many of those are in northern climes with little need.  A few summers ago, the nations of western Europe had a heat wave.  (conditions were what we here in Texas call ‘summer’)  Over 35,000 people died.  Our average poor live better than the average overall Europeans.

Our new immigrants come here often with little more than the clothes on their backs, not speaking a word of English.  Their children graduate at the top of their classes and go on to be doctors, attorneys, business owners.

A while back, I went to see a band.  In a barbeque joint that has live music on the weekends.  Here I am, in a honkytonk wannabe, in flyover country, in the middle of Texas.  You know, real redneck racist hateful country, right?  Corncob-Smokin’, Banjo-Strokin’ Chicken-Chokin’ Cousin-Pokin’ Inbred Hillbilly Racist Morons.  Bitter too.

Not so much.  There were white people, black people, Hispanics, several types of Asians.  College kids, all the way up to retired age.  Bikers, preppies, cowboys.  Despite copious amounts of alcohol flowing in the place, you know what?  There was not a single fight.  No cross words.

I looked around and realized two things:  1) That even here in Backwardsville, there was a real mix of the world’s people, and 2) we were just people, having a good time.  That’s all.  Another realization I had shortly thereafter was this:  I love this country.  Nowhere else in the world could you have this situation.  Among countless other examples that engender the same feeling, the above video has one effect on me:

I’m. Proud. To. Be. An. American.

Michelle Obama, the Left, and the ‘Hate America First’ Crowd…

March 6, 2008

The ‘Hate America First’ term is an offshoot from the famous Jeanne Kirkpatrick speech at the 1984 RNC Convention, in which she coined the term “blame America first” to describe the American Left.

The American Left has evolved (or should I say devolved), and has moved beyond blame  and into hate for America, and everything it has always stood for.  Read the latest screed from the New Republic, Daily Kos, Huffington Post, listen to Air America (if you can find a market where they’re still on), walk into a classroom and have Howard Zinn, Ward Churchill or Noam Chomsky preaching their bilge at our kids.  Or, you can pay attention to what the man who may be our next President and his wife are saying.

Michelle Obama was raised on that garbage in college, writing her thesis at Princeton on how horrible the divide was, and how it would never get any better.  In fact, she feels that

Obama writes that the path she chose by attending Princeton would likely lead to her “further integration and/or assimilation into a white cultural and social structure that will only allow me to remain on the periphery of society; never becoming a full participant.”

Little wonder they chose to attend the Black Separatist church Trinity United Church of Christ.  The message there is one of a hateful America, one of no hope, and one in which all whites are to blame for Black America’s ills.  A church that endows well-known racist, anti-Semite hate-monger Louis Farrakhan with a Lifetime Achievement Award.  One that regularly puts down white America.

Little wonder that she said recently that she, for the first time in her adult life, is really proud of her country.  Of course, the campaign says, what she said wasn’t what she meant to say.  Just a misunderstanding, don’t you know.

Little wonder that three weeks later, she didn’t mean it so much, she says this in a New Yorker interview, one favorable to her:

Obama begins with a broad assessment of life in America in 2008, and life is not good: we’re a divided country, we’re a country that is “just downright mean,” we are “guided by fear,” we’re a nation of cynics, sloths, and complacents. “We have become a nation of struggling folks who are barely making it every day,” she said, as heads bobbed in the pews. “Folks are just jammed up, and it’s gotten worse over my lifetime. And, doggone it, I’m young. Forty-four!”

Ummm hmmm.  The article continues, wailing and moaning about how horrible America is, how it’s in decline, even though she and her husband seem to have made out like bandits.

Just after Barack was elected to the United States Senate, Michelle received a large pay increase—from $121,910 in 2004 to $316,962 in 2005. “Mrs. Obama is extremely overpaid,” one citizen wrote in a letter to the editor of the Tribune, after the paper published a story questioning the timing of the award. “Now, what is the real reason behind such an inflated salary?” Her bosses at the University of Chicago Hospitals vigorously defended the raise, pointing out that it put her salary on a par with that of other vice-presidents at the hospital.

More troubling to the Obamas’ image of civic rectitude is their entanglement with a campaign contributor named Antoin (Tony) Rezko in a 2005 real-estate deal. (Rezko is now awaiting trial on corruption charges.) That year, as the Tribune reported, the Obamas moved to a $1.65-million Georgian Revival mansion in Hyde Park, which features a thousand-bottle wine cellar and bookcases made of Honduran mahogany. On the day they bought the house, Rita Rezko, Tony’s wife, purchased the adjacent lot, which was wooded and empty, for $625,000.

But the rest of us are supposed to forego the high power corporate gigs that she’s managed, and forgo the deeeeluxe apartment in the sky, huh?  No more ‘movin on up’ for the rest of you once we got ours!

Michelle, let me tell you something about being proud of America.  You say that you are now proud of America for the first time in your adult life.  That would be 1982, by my math.

As for how awwwwfullll it is here in America:  Our ‘poor’ here live better than the average middle class individual. in. Europe.  Our poor have multiple televisions.  They own automobiles.  Big screen tv’s.  We have almost the whole country with air conditioning, where in the late 60’s, when I was born, barely half the country had it.  Most of the poor have microwave ovens, something that didn’t even exist a half century ago.  Cell phones.  Video games.  Computers.

Pretty good video.  Perhaps I should email it to the Obamas, since they don’t seem to have the message about how good things are here.  Or perhaps someone should let Senator Obama know that the biggest problem for the poor in America is not in fact kids going to bed hungry at night, but is obesity.  They have so much to eat, and so much expendable income, that they can blow money on the wrong kind of food, that being a fat fat McFatty is the problem for the poor.  Hmm….you know, if they straightened that out, that might help out with the ‘health care crisis’ a bit too…

Sorry, ADD moment there.

You know, maybe if they weren’t using their welfare money on beer and smokes (trust me on this one folks, I’m the mailman.  I deliver the checks, and see them not working, and see them sitting smoking and drinking), that might help a bit with the ‘health care crisis’ a bit too.

Okay.  Onto the good stuff.  Things to be proud of.  Let’s start with the rising prosperity of all Americans, but since the Obamas are black, we can look there.  In Michelle’s lifetime, black poverty rates have dropped by half, huge numbers have risen into the middle class during Michelle’s adult lifetime.  That’s a good thing, to be proud of, no?

We presided over, and were responsible for, the fall of the Soviet Union.  The Evil Empire.  Responsible for the enslavement of hundreds of millions, and the deaths of several scores of millions of people.  We did that.

More recently?  Tens of millions of people freed in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Not bad.

All the assistance we sent after the Indonesian tsunami?  No one else in the world sent nearly as much assistance.  Government, civilian, navy, dollars, feet on the ground.  The earthquake in Bam, Iran a couple of years before that?  They’re our enemies, that was during the Iraq war, when they were already stirring up trouble.  We were first on it.  No questions asked.  Not proud of that, huh?

Despite the wailing and knashing of teeth from the AGW crowd about us not being on board with Kyoto, and they praise Europe for signing on, Europe’s dreaded CO2 emissions are way up in the last 10 years.  Way up.  America’s CO2 Levels?  Up slightly, far lower than our economy’s growth would indicate.  Without dragging our economy with bad treaties….whoda thunkit?  We have more forest land now, than ever before.  Largely due to the fact that we can farm more efficiently, with less land.  Less land needed for agriculture, the more land can be returned to its natural state of forest or grassland.

We’ve given massive amounts of money, research, and time to eradicating AIDS and other diseases in Africa and other Third World nations.  Believe it or not, while they still have a ways to go, the third world has made vast improvements in poverty rates, starvation, disease, unemployment, most any indicator you choose, in the last 40 years.  We are a large reason for that.

Those are just a few things I can think of that I’m proud of, that the left should agree with as well.  People being free to choose their own destiny, poor Americans greatly increasing their well being, assisting the disaster stricken, helped the environment.  And that doesn’t even count the technology revolution that has made our lives better, easier, and made so much of our daily life easier and cheaper.

I’m pretty darned proud of the things that have happened in my adult life, Michelle, and I’m not even as you are!  Guess it’s that ‘two America’ thing…wait, that’s John Edwards… Maybe since you two seem to be on the same, woe is us (even though you’ve made it big) page, you’ll get his endorsement.

Michelle, Howard, Noam, I like my country, and am damned proud of us.  So are millions of others, who haven’t had our heads filled with your ‘hate America first’ ideology.  Deal with it.
